Earlier this year we commissioned Welsh based artist Andrew Smith to produce a series of paintings to go on permenant display in the walkway between the town car park in Llandrindod WElls and Station Crescent. Andrew has started work on the frieze and is keeping us up to date with his progress on this socail media pages. We are sharing his posts on our facebook page.

WE are really excited by his work and are looking forward to the frieze being installed, which we hope to be in late March 2021. At the same time we will have an exhibition of Andrews research, ideas and designs for the project at Centre Celf so people are able to see the development of his ideas.

This month some of the regular participants of our art workshops will be receiving an early Christmas package through the letterbox to help make their seasons greeting a little more personal.

Winging their way are parcels containing materials and Christmas project ideas for printing cards and wrapping paper as well as making Christmas decorations.

We hope they will be inspired by these ideas to develop their own designs and continue to create.

Members of Celf o Gwmpas's Artists Network were pleased to be asked by Kate Milsom and Adam Fuest, owners of Bradleys on Middleton street, Llandrindod Wells, to create their Christmas window display for 2020.

The Advent Calendar of Art will see a piece of art revealed each day on the count down to Christmas. The display will remain on view into the New Year for all to enjoy.

The window display is part of Llandrindod Wells seasonal festival of lights which sees local shops 'dressing' their windows with a festive theme. The displays are judged and awarded prizes. Shop window lights are kept on so you can view them even after closing time.

With help and support from Powys County Council and the owners of the Bargain buys building, Celf o Gwmpas are thrilled to let you know that Harlech based artist, Andrew Smith, has been commissioned to produce a series of paintings to go on permanent display in the walkway between the town car park and Station Crescent in Llandrindod Wells.

Earlier this year Celf o Gwmpas sent out a request for artists to submit ideas for the project. We wanted a series of art work which depicted the local area, people and heritage. We were blown away by the wide and varied proposals. Shortlisted artists were asked to develop their ideas further before Andrews designs were chosen.

The selection process was all done virtually, although before Andrew submitted his designs he was able to visit Llandrindod Wells and spend the day walking around the town, getting ideas and inspiration to incorporate into his designs as well as developing a feel for the area where his paintings will be on display.

For the walkway project, Andrew will be making Hygeia Frieze, which will consist of seven panels of work that combines abstract and figurative elements with bold colour, referencing aspects of the architecture and heritage of Llandrindod Wells.

Andrew is an experienced painter who works locally and internationally on public art projects and commissions, exploring colour in terms of location and scale. You can see some of his work along the Splott railway bridge in Cardiff as well as his wall mural “Hidden Shapes’ in John Street, produced as part of the Llawn International Festival in Llandudno.

Andrew has wide and varied experience of working in different countries, including Russia and Australia. His most recent residency experience in India informs his current practice.

Andrew will be visiting the town again as soon as he is able and will be working on the paintings in his studio, where for over twenty-five years he has increasingly focused on the subject of colour in painting, before they are ready to be installed. You will be able to keep up to date with the progress of the paintings via Celf o Gwmpas’s and Andrews social media pages. We hope the work will be installed early spring 2021.

Sblash o liw newydd i fywiogi diwrnod pawb

Gyda chymorth a chefnogaeth gan Gyngor Sir Powys a pherchnogion adeilad Bargain Buys, mae Celf o Gwmpas yn falch o’ch hysbysu bod artist o Harlech, Andrew Smith, wedi'i gomisiynu i gynhyrchu cyfres o baentiadau i'w harddangos yn barhaol yn y rhodfa rhwng maes parcio'r dref a Station Crescent yn Llandrindod.

Yn gynharach eleni, anfonodd Celf o Gwmpas gais i artistiaid gyflwyno syniadau ar gyfer y prosiect. Roeddem yn eisiau cyfres o waith celf a oedd yn darlunio'r ardal leol, y bobl a threftadaeth. Cawsom ein syfrdanu gan y cynigion eang ac amrywiol. Gofynnwyd i artistiaid ar y rhestr fer ddatblygu eu syniadau ymhellach cyn y dewiswyd dyluniadau Andrew.

Cafodd y broses ddethol ei wneud bron yn hollol rhithiol, er cyn i Andrew gyflwyno ei ddyluniadau, roedd wedi cael cyfle i ymweld â Llandrindod a threulio'r diwrnod yn cerdded o amgylch y dref, yn cael syniadau ac ysbrydoliaeth i'w hymgorffori yn ei ddyluniadau yn ogystal â datblygu teimlad ar gyfer yr ardal lle bydd ei baentiadau'n cael eu harddangos.

Ar gyfer y prosiect rhodfa, bydd Andrew yn creu Hygeia Frieze, a fydd yn cynnwys saith panel o waith sy'n cyfuno elfennau haniaethol a throsiadol gyda lliw beiddgar, gan gyfeirio at agweddau ar bensaernïaeth a threftadaeth Llandrindod.

Mae Andrew yn arlunydd profiadol sy'n gweithio'n lleol ac yn rhyngwladol ar brosiectau a chomisiynau celf gyhoeddus, gan archwilio lliw o ran lleoliad a graddfa. Gallwch weld rhywfaint o'i waith ar hyd pont reilffordd Sblot yng Nghaerdydd yn ogystal â'i furlun "Hidden Shapes" yn John Street, a gynhyrchwyd fel rhan o Ŵyl Ryngwladol Llawn yn Llandudno.

Mae gan Andrew brofiad eang ac amrywiol o weithio mewn gwahanol wledydd, gan gynnwys Rwsia ac Awstralia. Mae ei brofiad preswyl diweddaraf yn India yn llywio ei arfer presennol.

Bydd Andrew yn ymweld â'r dref eto cyn gynted ag y bydd hynny’n bosibl ac yn gweithio ar y paentiadau yn ei stiwdio, lle mae wedi canolbwyntio fwyfwy ar y pwnc o liw mewn peintio ers dros bum mlynedd ar hugain, cyn iddynt fod yn barod i gael eu gosod. Byddwch yn gallu cael y wybodaeth ddiweddaraf am gynnydd y paentiadau drwy dudalennau cyfryngau cymdeithasol Celf o Gwmpas ac Andrew. Gobeithiwn y bydd y gwaith yn cael ei osod ar ddechrau’r gwanwyn 2021.
